Top Types To Odd Types Of Wedding Confetti

We love a good excuse to shoot the throwing of confetti at a wedding. Most of the wedding venues we visit in Essex and Surrey are more then happy to accommodate this fun part of the wedding ritual. These days you can pick up a huge mixture of different wedding confetti most are good to the environment and bio-degradable. Heres a short list of the ones I’ve heard of, I’ve ordered them from eco-hippy-cool at the top to just plain weird at the bottom:

Bubbles
Wedding rice
Dried Petals
Rose Petals
Sparklers
Coconut shavings
Feathers
(Not sure if this means you just crack open you best John Lewis Hungarian Duck Feather Pillow.)
Doves
Butterflies

Goodness only knows where you’d get enough butterflies for the last method, nor how exactly you’d hand them out. One can only hope the bide designates one lucky brides maid to pick any remains from her hair and dress.

This rather nice image was taken at a Essex based wedding and really captures the essence of the reportage style that we do.

Reportage photography is all about trying to photograph somebody without them really being aware of you, while you capture a natural image, trying to show people who look at the wedding photographs what the atmosphere was like. Candid pics can really bring out the characters of the people in the wedding photos.

Top Tips For Groom & Best Man Speech (Part 1)

The good (and sometimes bad) thing about being a wedding photographer is that you get to sit through lots and lots and lots of wedding speeches. Usually we’re working quite hard whilst these are going on taking candid photos of the reactions of the guests, but I always pay attention to the speech to get a idea of when the guests might react (fit’s of laughter is always best, but doesn’t always happen.)

So the following is a few top tips gleaned from the numerous speeches we’ve sat through:

Always plan ahead
It really doesn’t matter how cool you think you are in every day life, don’t think you can just rock up to do the speech without any preparation. I’ve seen quite a few cool and funny guys become quite unstuck when it’s come to speech time and they have a room full of people looking at them.
Don’t do any ‘in jokes’
Jokes that only you and the hand full of guys that went on your stag do are going to get aren’t much good for the groom or best mans speech. It’s a bit like telling a joke that no one finds funny and then spending the next five minutes pissing your pants laughing your head off.
Practice make perfect
Where speeches are concerned, practice, practice and practice some more. The slicker you can be with your delivery the easier it will come and it really does make all the difference. If you can practice in front of a friend or a loved one then do that and get them to give you some honest opinions of how it went.
Don’t make any crude joke
Remember you’ve got more people in the room then just your mates from the stag do, so cracking jokes about what the groom did with that banana will go down like a lead balloon. Make all your jokes things that the vast majority of the room can relate to.
Read nice and slowly and keep your head up
As nice as your shoes might look unfortunately those two particular inanimate objects aren’t going to crack a smile at your craftily constructed jokes about the grooms over- use of hair gel (or what ever). So keep your head up and project your voice. Speaking nice and slowly will help you stop from stumbling over your words, slower, by the way, then you might think.

Finding the right wedding venue can be a long and arduous task, but it’s always worth the effort in the end to find that special venue that fits your personality. Heres a run down of five rather nice venues in the Surrey area:

1) Botleys Mansion

Botleys Mansion is the latest addition to the Bijou Weddings portfolio. Botleys Mansion opens for its first wedding in June 2010. Its a magnificent 12 bedrooms absolutely amazing house with a grand banqueting hall for 400 with sweeping staircase giving you that grand entrance as a married couple.

Savill Court Hotel & Spa is a picturesque and lovely place. With four rooms licensed for Civil Ceremonies this venue is able to cater for both the small and larger weddings, and with the hotel set in 22 acres of manicured grounds, which is ideal for creating memorable wedding photographs.

Oatlands Park Hotel have four reception rooms to choose from, all of which are licensed for civil ceremonies and have their own unique style. The beautiful grounds with sweeping lawns, parkland and mature towering trees provide the perfect romantic setting for your photographs.

4) Oaks Farm Barn

10 miles from London and a stone’s throw from Croydon and Bromley, this idyllic wedding venue is set against a backdrop of rolling hills and rural beauty, with two acres of stunning cottage gardens. They have a cosy oak-beamed barn and an Orangery is also available for civil ceremonies with views across the picturesque gardens.

5) Great Fosters

Great Fosters is a Elizabethan house set amongst stunning formal gardens. This grand building became a hotel in the 1930s and has been sympathetically converted by the Sutcliffe Family. Great Fosters retails alot of the original details and features and is designated as a Scheduled Historic Monument and Grade One listed building. With 50 acres of gardens – a Japanese bridge, lake, fountain and Saxon moat – provide an idyllic backdrop for photographs.

With all of the focus of the wedding day being on the bride and groom, some times it’s easy to forget about the guests. That’s where reportage photography at weddings really shines as it allows you to capture the emotions of the friends and family at the wedding. This example taken at a Surrey wedding is one of my favourites and really shows everyone having fun.
